The Wheel of Fortune Spread

After examining the first three cards in detail, look at the “I do not rule” card. How is this energy different from the pattern created by the first three? How do you react to this card? Does it indicate something that may distract you or does it represent an area of life that had to be put on hold in order to focus on something else? You may be tempted to read this card as something that is absent from your life and that you should cultivate. Resist that urge, though, as that may not be true. While there are times in life when balance is desirable, there are also times when a disciplined focus is necessary. During these times, balance is not only improbable but also undesirable. Take some time with this card, considering how things might change if you were to bring that energy into the present.

Also spend time comparing the center card to the other cards. The center is something that hasn’t changed and won’t change. It will in some way affect and influence all the other cards. In fact, if you have trouble seeing a progression in the first three cards, try looking at them all in relation to this card, as if they were different aspects of it.

Walking the Talk Spread

People seem to either love or hate the Hierophant. For those who don’t care for Arcana 5, it represents oppression and rigid dogma. Among those who like the card you’ll find many opinions about the meaning. The inspiration for this spread is my take on that card as representing the intersection of spirituality and everyday life. That is, how do we express our beliefs in daily life? How well do we walk our talk?

Before beginning, separate your deck into the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. Use the Major Arcana cards for positions 1–6, which represent your divine or Higher Self and ideals. Use the Minor Arcana for positions 7–12, which represent your practices in everyday life.
